GenJams

AI-assisted filmmaking

AI-assisted filmmaking shaped by story, visual judgment and the discipline of post-production. These collaborative short films draw on experience in editing, finishing and narrative storytelling, with attention to pacing, continuity and the details that make a sequence work. Selected cuts include further refinements beyond the original GenJam sessions.

GenJams are Machine Cinema’s collaborative filmmaking sessions, bringing creators together to develop an original short around a shared challenge using AI-assisted production tools. The films featured here began in short, time-boxed filmmaking challenges.

Collaborative films, selected versions and the creative challenges behind them.

Luma · Innovative Dreams × Machine Cinema

Temporal Tuna

Winning submission · 1:02

Winner, Best Overall Film: Temporal Tuna was created during Innovative Dreams × Machine Cinema’s four-hour filmmaking challenge, ‘A Journey Through Time.’ Live performances were filmed on the volume stage at Manhattan Beach Studios with generated environments. The resulting footage became source material for further generation in Luma, then was edited into the winning submission.

Credits

  • The team included Christopher Jeffries, Jay Judah, Robin Warren and Maria Haras. Story development, AI-generated imagery, producing, and camera work were collaborative efforts. Jay was our gracious performer. My additional roles were visual effects, editing, final assembly, and delivery.

Popcorn · Solarpunk Vol. 02

Battery

Director’s cut · 1:50

Created during Machine Cinema’s Solarpunk Vol. 02 GenJam, Battery began as a four-hour filmmaking challenge using Popcorn. Its visual direction draws heavily on LAIKA’s stop-motion films, with deep admiration for the studio’s extraordinary contribution to the craft. An evolving team shaped the story and generated imagery, with collaborators joining and stepping away throughout the session.

Credits

  • Brandon Patino and I collaborated on writing, story development, and AI-generated imagery, with creative and generative support from Mario Mills and Holy Ojakovo. Additional collaborators joined throughout the session, and additional credits are being confirmed.

Higgsfield · 4As Presents: GenJam Los Angeles

Nullway

1:04

Created with Mickael Bec Velazquez at 4As Presents: GenJam Los Angeles, Nullway began with a brief revealed on site and a three-hour challenge to produce “a totally normal flight safety video for intergalactic travel.” The Machine Cinema event at CYLNDR Studios brought teams together for hands-on filmmaking using Higgsfield.

Credits

  • Created in collaboration with Mickael Bec Velazquez
  • Additional collaborator credits to be added.

Collaborative short film

The Octopus and the Bear

1:28

The Octopus and the Bear was created at Machine Cinema’s GenJam with Flik in Los Angeles, where it placed second in both the ‘Best Overall’ and ‘WTF’ categories. Teams used Flik’s generative AI tools to complete short films within 3 hours, then screened their completed work.

Credits

  • My roles were story development, character generation, and video editing. As one of my first GenJams, my collaborator records for the project are incomplete. Full credits will be provided once contributions are confirmed.
